Quick Tips on Ingredients for Iced Coffee Recipe with Milk

For an iced coffee recipe with milk, youโ€™ll need:

  • Ice cubes
  • Espresso
  • Milk
Ingredients for iced coffee with milk: ice cubes, coffee, and milk arranged on a table.

Letโ€™s start with some quick tips on ingredients and prepping:

Ice:
Of course, we need ice! Use it for the drink itself and to cool the glass. So, youโ€™ll need a few extra cubes to chill your glass. Or, if you have time, pop the glass in the fridge for about 30 minutes. That way, you wonโ€™t need ice cubes for coolingโ€”just for the drink itself.

For the first method, you’ll need ice cubes and freshly brewed espresso. For the second method, you’ll need espresso or coffee ice cubes. Prep them in advance, add them to frothed or regular milk, and enjoy an extra refreshing coffee drink.

Milk:
You can froth the milk or just pour it in liquid. We love frothy milk.

And hereโ€™s a tip: if youโ€™re frothing cold milk, go for low-fat milk with 3-3.5 grams of protein and low fat (1.5 grams). This type of milk gives you that perfect, firm, cold foam. The protein creates stable, velvety foam, while the small amount of fat helps it stay fluffy. We froth the milk using a French press. Check our blog post for tips on frothing cold milk.

If youโ€™re not frothing, whole milk works best. Ice will melt and dilute the milk, so full-fat milk is perfect. The higher fat helps keep that creamy flavor.

Plant-based milk is a great alternative to regular milk if you’re vegan or dairy-free. For iced coffee recipes, try almond, oat, or coconut milkโ€”just make sure itโ€™s cold! Thatโ€™s why you should keep the milk you choose in the fridge. Choose a barista blend for a creamy texture!

Espresso:

To make an iced coffee recipe with milk, use any kind of coffee. Just brew your espresso stronger than usual. Since weโ€™ll dilute it with ice and milk, double up on the espresso and use less water in your espresso machine. If youโ€™re using your favorite brewing method, simply add more coffee powder.

You can also use a French press, coffee filters, or coffee machine. Or, prepare cold brew coffee in advance. Just remember to brew it stronger than you usually do.

Optional ingredients: Coffee syrups and sweeteners

Add brown sugar or a tasty syrup to the hot coffee for extra flavor. Caramel sauce, chocolate or maple syrup, or a splash of sweetened condensed milk work well. Stir syrups or sweeteners into hot coffee or espresso right after brewing. This way, they melt perfectly.

Letโ€™s put it all together!

First Method: Make Iced Coffee with Ice Cubes and Milk

  1. Make a strong espressoโ€”the stronger, the better! Nowโ€™s the time to add brown or white sugar, or syrup, if you like. All sweeteners dissolve best when the coffee or espresso is still hot. If you want to create beautiful layers with syrup, milk, and coffee, add some syrup to the coffee and pour it as the first layer at the bottom of the glass. However, adding all the syrup to the coffee or espresso is also fine. This way, you’ll get lovely layers of milk and coffee.

Pro tip: donโ€™t add syrup over iceโ€”it gets thick and sinks to the bottom. Check out our blog post for white chocolate syrup. Itโ€™s a simple syrup recipe you can make in 10-15 minutes! A great way to add your favorite flavor. Yum!

If you have time, chill the espresso in the fridge. If not, give it a quick ice bath for 3-4 minutes. Add ice cubes to a bowl and place a cup of espresso in it to cool down quickly. Once the espresso is chilled, you’ll have cold water and leftover ice cubes. Just toss them outโ€”we donโ€™t need them anymore.

  1. Chill your glass โ€“ Add ice cubes and move them around for 3 minutes to get the glass cold. Or put the glass in the fridge for 30 minutes before you start prepping the iced coffee recipe with milk. If using ice cubes, toss out any melted ice or water.
  2. Optional Step โ€“ Froth Cold Milk: If you want to add frothed milk, this is the moment to froth it. We froth our cold milk in a French press. If youโ€™re using regular milk, just skip this step. Check our method on how to froth cold milk and create stable foam.
  3. Optional step โ€“ Want to get fancy? Drizzle some syrup inside the glass for decoration.
  4. Choose a tall glass and fill it up with ice cubesโ€”pack it full!
  5. Pour in cold milk, stopping just before the top to leave room for the espresso. Check out our blog post for the best way to froth cold milk. If youโ€™re adding frothed milk, add 2-3 tablespoons of foam first, then pour in the milk. This way, the foam rises to the top, giving you a nice, stable layer of foam on your drink.
  6. Add your cooled espresso โ€“ Look at those layers forming!

And boom! Your iced coffee recipe with milk is ready!

Second Method: Make Iced Coffee with Milk and Espresso Ice Cubes

This one takes a little prep, but itโ€™s worth it.

  1. Freeze your espresso in ice cube trays ahead of time. Youโ€™ll have espresso or coffee ice cubes ready the next day!
  2. When you’re ready, fill your chilled glass with those espresso cubes.
  3. Add your frothed or regular milk. Check our method to froth cold milk for stable velvety foam.

No need for extra espresso hereโ€”the flavor of coffee melts right into the drink as the cubes dissolve. For the best way to chill the glass, froth cold milk, or how to choose regular milk for an extra creamy drink, check the previous method.

And there you goโ€”two different ways to make a great iced coffee with milk! Who needs a coffee shop when you can make this creamy and delicious drink at home?!

You can also use this second method when preparing for guests. Freeze strong coffee or espresso ice cubes. Fill a large pitcher or individual glass pitchers with them, and add milk! Perfect for a big party!

Tips for Making Perfect Iced Coffee

  • You can froth the milk with a French press or a milk frother. Donโ€™t use a coffee machine for this. Warm frothed milk will cause the ice to melt quickly. And you wonโ€™t enjoy the drink as much. Check our tips on frothing milk for cold drinks.
  • Use cooled espresso or coffee. You need cold coffee to keep your drink refreshing.
  • Use less sugar in your coffee, especially if you prefer coffee black. Milk is naturally sweet, so you can try it without any sugar. Enjoy the rich flavor and the perfect combination of coffee, milk, and ice!
  • Make coffee ice cubes and keep them in the freezer. Fill your glass with the cubes and add regular or frothed milk as you like. What a quick and refreshing drink on a hot afternoon!
  • Use a tall glass or mason jar for iced coffee to enjoy the beautiful layers of espresso, milk, ice cubes, and syrup.
