Craving Something Sweet? Try Quick and Easy Caramelized Sugar Toast
Are you craving something sweet but don’t have anything left in your fridge? And you don’t feel like going to the grocery store? That sounds so familiar! We’ve got you covered! Let’s make a quick dessert together. You need very simple ingredients. And the best part is you surely have them in your fridge! You’ll need white toast bread, sugar, and something greasy — butter, coconut oil, or ghee. It only takes 10 minutes, including prep time.
The recipe is very simple. Choose butter, ghee, or coconut oil. Mix it with sugar and spread it on white toast bread. Fry in a pan until it’s caramelized on both sides. The result? A crispy outside and a soft inside sugar toast.
And the best part? You can store it for several days, and it won’t turn soft and will keep its crispy crust!
The Best Sugar Toast Recipe, Tips and Substitutes
You will love this caramelized sugar toast recipe. It’s so quick and extra crunchy. Let’s make it!
You only need three simple ingredients:
- White toast bread
- Sugar
- Coconut oil, ghee, or regular butter
Easy, right?
We recommend using white toast bread. Then, the inside of the toast will be soft and tender, and the outside will be crispy.
You can use coconut oil, ghee, or regular butter. We tried all three. The coconut oil toast is the tastiest, followed by ghee and butter. If you choose butter, ensure it’s softened or melted slightly in the microwave. Butter is our least favorite option because it splatters while frying. Keep an eye on it because it can burn fast. If using ghee, add 10 grams more compared to coconut oil.
We chose coconut oil, and the result was incredibly delicious. Grab a fork and mix the coconut oil with sugar until it’s all blended nicely. Then, spread this yummy mixture on one side of your bread, leaving the other plain.
You can cook it in a regular frying pan or grill pan. We love using a grill pan. There is no need to grease a pan!
Heat it to a maximum for 2-3 minutes. Then, turn it to medium heat (about 6 out of 9 on our stove). Place your bread slice, spread-side down, and cook for 3-4 minutes until it gets a beautiful caramelized sugar crust. The sugar and oil will melt and turn into gooey caramel in the pan—it looks delicious, right?
Flip the toast over and move it around to soak up any leftover caramel. Press the toast gently into the pan so the caramel sticks to it. Cook until both sides are toasted. Fry for about two minutes or less on the other side. The toast fries up quickly on the second side, so keep an eye on it to avoid burning.
Now, move the toast to a plate and let it cool down. This will make the caramel harden up and become super crispy. Serve it up and enjoy!
Quick Checklist for Making Sugar Toast Extra Crunchy
To make sure your toasts are crispy, just follow these simple steps:
- Mix equal parts of coconut oil and sugar
- Spread the mixture on one side of the bread.
- Fry it in a hot pan over medium heat.
- Flip the toast when it’s golden.
- After flipping, gather the caramel by moving the bread slice and fry until it’s ready.
- Let it cool for a couple of minutes for the caramel to harden
This way, sugar toast will have an extra crunch; now enjoy!
Butter, Coconut Oil, or Ghee? What’s the Most Delicious and How to Use
Sugar toast works with coconut oil, ghee, or butter. But what’s the most delicious option, and what should be considered when cooking with each one?
- Our absolute favorite is coconut oil. It’s extra delicious and aromatic. Plus, it’s vegan-friendly.
- The second best option is ghee. The toast turns out very crispy. Remember, you need a little bit more ghee than coconut oil. While we use 30 g of coconut oil, we use a bit more ghee, 40 g.
- Be careful when using regular butter. It contains water, which can splash while frying. Keep an eye on it, as it can burn quickly. But considering all this, the toasts still turn out tasty and crispy.

Sugar Toast | Tips for Extra Crunch
Ingredients
- 2 slices of white toast bread
- 30 g sugar
- 30 g coconut oil ghee, or regular butter*
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix 30 g of sugar and 30 g of coconut oil (or ghee or butter) using a fork until well combined.
- Preheat a frying pan to maximum heat. Then, change to medium heat (we use 6 out of 9 on our stove) for frying. Don’t add any oil or butter to a frying pan.
- Using a knife, spread the sugar-coconut oil mixture evenly on one side of each slice of toast. Leave the other side of the toast empty.
- Place the bread slices, spread-side down, onto the preheated pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the underside is golden and caramelized.
- Carefully flip the toast slices. As you flip, move them around in the pan to gather any leftover spread from the previously fried side, ensuring even coating. Cook for 2 minutes or less until the other side is golden and crispy.
- Transfer the toast to a plate, let it cool down so the caramel becomes crunchy, and serve.
