Chocolate Syrup for Coffee Recipe: Make It at Home
Ready to whip up chocolate coffee syrup? It’s super simple, and you only need a few ingredients. Let’s check them out!
Ingredients:
- High-quality unsweetened cocoa powder
- Sugar
- Vanilla sugar or vanilla extract
- Water
- A pinch of salt (don’t skip this—it balances the flavors perfectly!)
Use granulated sugar instead of maple syrup or other sweeteners. It gives the syrup a thicker consistency. Choose organic cocoa powder and make sure it’s good quality cocoa powder that is free of additives. This will give your chocolate syrup a smooth, rich texture. The addition of cocoa powder with too many additives can cause clumps. So stick with pure, high-quality powder.
Let’s talk about the kitchen equipment you’ll need for this chocolate syrup for coffee recipe.
Equipment:
- Kitchen scale
- Silicone spatula
- Saucepan or small pot with a thick bottom
- Sieve
We love using a silicone spatula because it lets you easily scrape the sides and bottom of the pan. This helps prevent the chocolate syrup from sticking to the pan. But if you have other tools you prefer, feel free to use them!
Now, it’s time to dive in and whip up your own traditional chocolate syrup!
Step 1: Mix the Dry Ingredients
Start by grabbing a small saucepan or pot with a thick bottom. If you’re making a larger batch of syrup, use a medium saucepan.
Make sure the saucepan is dry. Sift the cocoa powder through a sieve to remove any lumps. We recommend using dark cocoa powder with no sugar or additives.
Next, add the sugar, table salt, and vanilla sugar (if you’re using it). If you’re using vanilla extract, wait for the next step!
Mix everything together with a silicone spatula. It’s the best tool for the job. Look at that— the sugar crystals are coated in cocoa, and it already smells amazing!
Step 2: Add Hot Water
Heat the water slightly to around 50–60°C (120–140°F). It doesn’t need to boil—just warm up. This step is important because cocoa doesn’t dissolve well in cold water.
Pour the warm water into the dry mix. If you’re using vanilla extract, add it now. Combine water and dry ingredients. See how it’s coming together? The sugar dissolves already, even though we haven’t heated the pot yet!
Step 3: Cook the Syrup
It’s time to cook! Place the pot on high heat and stir constantly. Watch closely as the syrup rises quickly on high heat. Look—it’s starting to boil!
Once it’s bubbling, lower the heat to just below medium heat. Let it simmer for 3–4 minutes. Continue to stir with your silicone spatula. This helps prevent sticking, and you can easily scrape down the sides. Be careful—it smells so good you might want to taste it already. But it’s hot right now!
Step 4: Cool and Watch It Thicken
Take the pot off the heat and let the homemade syrup cool. Then, pour it into a glass jar or any storage container you prefer. It’s still liquid now, but don’t worry—it will thicken as it cools.
After about two hours in the fridge, check it out. Look at that texture! Perfectly smooth, just the way you want it.
That’s it! Your chocolate syrup for coffee recipe is ready. Now, you can enjoy a rich chocolate kick in your coffee anytime—without the extra cost or heading to a coffee shop.

How to Make Thicker Syrup
You can easily adjust this simple recipe to match your taste. After making it the first time, you can tweak the texture. Want a thicker syrup? Or even a thick chocolate sauce? Simply use 10–20g less water. If you want to make hot fudge, adjust the water even further!
Storage Tips
Now that your homemade chocolate syrup recipe is ready let’s talk about how to store it.
Store your syrup in an airtight container, mason jar, or glass bottle in the fridge. At first, it will be quite liquid, but after about two hours in the fridge, it will reach the perfect texture. Don’t store it at room temperature—always keep it in the fridge.
This chocolate syrup lasts up to one month in the fridge. Or up to three months in the freezer. It’s perfect for coffee, but trust us, you’ll want to drizzle it on everything!
To store it long-term, pour the syrup into ice cube trays and freeze. Then, transfer the frozen cubes to an airtight container in the freezer. These frozen cubes will last up to three months.
And that’s it! Now, you can easily make and store chocolate syrup for coffee recipe. It’s easy and delicious and better than anything store-bought!
